I used to worship Prince like he was a genius, now I think half his catalog is just filler
I spent most of my 20s defending Prince to anyone who would listen, bought 14 of his albums on CD, and drove from Cleveland to Detroit in 2004 just to see him live. A couple years back I sat down and actually played straight through Purple Rain and Sign o the Times, and I found myself skipping 6 or 7 tracks on each one. What got me was a guy at a record store in Akron who said flat out that Prince put out 39 albums mostly to pad his contract, and I couldn't argue with him. Still love the hits, but the deep catalog worship feels like people pretending a batch of B-sides is scripture. Has anyone else gone back through an artist they were obsessed with and found out it was mostly filler?
The "39 albums to pad his contract" line hits hard. I used to be the guy who'd argue Prince could do no wrong, but I went back through Sign o the Times last year and yeah, I was skipping a bunch too. Guess we just had more time and patience back then.
