My barber in Tulsa told me to stop worshipping dead guitar gods and I thought he was nuts
Six months ago my barber Doug, who has played since 1979, told me most guys who drool over Hendrix and Stevie Ray never actually sit down and learn the parts. I figured he was just being a grumpy old guy, so I ignored him. Then I spent two weeks trying to nail the intro to Little Wing and realized I was copying 40 years of other people's mistakes instead of just playing clean. Doug was right that the hype turns these players into statues nobody can actually learn from, and I've seen it in every guitar forum since. Now I catch myself rolling my eyes when someone calls Clapton a god but can't name one full song of his. Does anyone here actually think the dead guitar heroes get more praise than living players who play better right now?
