My grandpa called Sinatra overrated at his own birthday dinner and 2 cousins walked out
So my grandpa turned 82 last month and we did the whole family thing at a diner in Paterson, and somehow the music got onto old blue eyes, and he just goes "kid, nobody in my neighborhood ever played that guy, we had doo wop on the corner, Sinatra was for the guys who had a car." Two of my cousins literally got up and left the table, one of them said he was disrespecting a legend while he was walking out the door. I've been sitting with it for 3 weeks now because here's the thing, he wasn't even trying to be edgy, he was just telling me what it was actually like growing up there in the 50s. It got me wondering how much of what we call untouchable is just stuff that got repeated enough times until everyone agreed. I'm not saying the man couldn't sing, I'm saying if you put him in front of a room of actual working class Italians from that era and half of them shrug, maybe the legend is doing more work than the music. Has anyone else had an older relative casually knock down a big name like that, and did it change how you hear them after?
