Vent: The Marilyn Monroe worship at a vintage shop I walked into last month
Found this little retro store in Portland. Owner had a whole shrine to her. Photos, dresses, old perfume bottles. I get she was iconic but she made like 10 movies. Some weren't even good. I asked the owner why not more Audrey Hepburn or something. She looked at me like I insulted her grandma. Has anyone else noticed how people put her on this crazy pedestal?

Right, because nothing says "healthy relationship with celebrity culture" like building a literal altar to someone who died 60 years ago. I guess the owner's running a vintage shop, not a shrine to canonize someone. Next time ask her if she's got a virgin mary section too, since she's clearly collecting saints. People act like Marilyn invented acting instead of just being really good at standing in front of a camera while wearing a dress. Ten movies, a ton of personal drama, and suddenly she's the patron saint of glamour. Funny how nobody builds a similar shrine to, say, Rita Hayworth or someone who actually had a longer film career.

@thea602 gets it. I saw a booth at a flea market that was basically a Marilyn shrine with a price tag on the candles. Seemed more like selling a vibe than honoring her actual work.

Well I used to think she was just a tragic figure worth remembering, but after seeing how some folks treat her like a saint I started to change my mind. There is this weird cult of personality around her that feels a little uncomfortable if you stop and think about it. She was a real person with real problems, not some kind of goddess to be worshipped. I mean the woman struggled with addiction and mental health issues, and now people put her on a pedestal like she was perfect. It seems like a way to romanticize a sad story rather than appreciate her actual work.
