Just read that a worn chain can stretch over half an inch in 100 links, found it in an old Park Tool manual

Kevin331 has a point about the skipping, but half an inch of stretch sounds like a worst-case lab test number. Most people replace their chain way before it gets that bad. A chain that worn would probably just snap under any real load, not just skip. Park Tool manuals are solid, but that's a failure point you'd never actually ride on.

Holy cow, that's a crazy amount of stretch... I can't even picture a chain getting that bad. Emma96 is right, you'd have to be trying to destroy it to get there.

Half inch is still wild but actual snapped chains happen way more often than people think.

Half an inch on a hundred links is just wild to picture. That's like every single pin and roller being totally shot. I bet that thing would skip over a brand new cassette like crazy. You would have felt that just pedaling around the block.
