Just realized my stance on torque wrenches is probably wrong after talking to a 20-year shop veteran
Been telling customers for years that a torque wrench is overkill for home mechanics, but last week a retired guy named Pete in Tucson showed me his bent seatpost clamp bolt and said "I've seen 40 of these a year for two decades, all from hand tightening," so now I'm wondering how many of my own repairs would have lasted longer if I'd just bought the $60 one I kept skipping.

That old shop guy has a point. I spent years guessing on lug nuts and small bolts, figured snug was good enough. Then a buddy loaned me his torque wrench for a brake job, and on the first ride home I felt a click that told me I had been way off on most stuff before. Now it's a ten second thing after every wheel change and tightening seat clamps, and I have not stripped a single bolt since. The cheap beam style ones work fine for home use, you do not need the fancy clicker model to get the job done right.
