Showerthought: I stopped replacing whole shift cable housings and just did the inner wire, and I'm not sure that was the right call
Had a bike come in 3 weeks ago with gritty shifting and the customer only wanted to pay for the cheap fix, so I swapped just the inner wire for $12 instead of the full housing job at $45. It shifted clean on the stand and he was happy, but I keep thinking about that gunked up housing sitting there grinding away at the new wire. My old mentor always said the wire is the cheap part and the housing is where the job lives. Now I'm wondering if I just sold him a repair that'll fail in 6 months. Any of you run into this and how do you handle the upsell without sounding like you're just fishing for more money?
