Took my shop tools to a bike co-op in Austin and felt like a rookie again

I stopped by the Yellow Bike Project co-op last weekend to donate some old cables and housing. These volunteers were overhauling about 15 donated bikes with just basic tools and no torque wrenches. One guy trued a wheel with a zip tie as a gauge and it rolled almost perfect. Made me realize how much fancy gear I rely on back in my own shop. Anyone else find yourself overcomplicating stuff after seeing someone nail it with minimum tools?

Man, I get that completely. Saw a guy at YBP fix a frozen derailleur with just a butter knife and some WD-40 once. It's humbling to watch honestly. I've got a torque wrench sitting in my stand right now that I barely touch after seeing how these folks just feel it out and get it right. @kimw57 probably has a point about the old school guys using fancy stuff if they could, but part of me thinks they'd still keep it simple out of habit. This whole experience made me realize the best tool is just knowing your bike, not having the most expensive kit.

Read an article somewhere that talked about how bike mechanics from the 80s did most of their work with a spoke wrench and a pair of pliers. Makes you wonder if all these fancy tools companies sell are really needed or just stuff they want us to buy. Kind of humbling to see someone true a wheel with a zip tie and realize you've been overthinking it the whole time.

But do you think old school mechanics would have used the fancy stuff if it was around back then?
