Tried Park Tool's chain checker against my cheap caliper method
After 3 chains that skipped like crazy, I finally bought the CC-3.2 and found out my homemade gauge was telling me chains were fine when they were stretched past 0.75. Has anyone else had a cheap method let them down?

Gotta say I see this a little different. I've been using a simple ruler method for years and it's been dead reliable for me. Park Tool stuff is great no doubt but I've had the CC-3.2 give me false wear readings on a couple chains that still rode perfectly fine for another thousand miles. The ruler trick where you check 12 full links against 12 inches has never let me down, and it's basically free. A lot of those chain checkers can push into the rollers differently on dirty chains or different brands and give you a bad reading. Your mileage may vary but maybe check your homemade method against a ruler before you ditch it completely.

Right, totally with you on this. I'm a big fan of the ruler method too, it's so simple and I've never had it steer me wrong, whereas I've definitely gotten some weird readings from the park tool checker on a dirty chain.

Interesting point about the ruler method being reliable for you. But I've had the opposite experience where a worn chain that passed the 12 inch ruler test still ended up wearing out my cassette prematurely. Those cheap chain checkers might have flaws, but at least they catch borderline wear before you start damaging other parts.
