Yeah that's facts, I had a chain that looked fine on mine but was completely shot when I checked it with a real ruler. Those cheap ones are basically just giving you false hope.

Actually checking twelve links is good but you really need to measure from pin center to pin center, not the outer edges of the rollers. Easy to get a wrong reading if you're just eyeballing the ends of the links.

Grab a ruler and measure over twelve links, that's the only way to know for sure.
