Which takes longer: finding a busted spoke or replacing it?

I spent 45 minutes just trying to figure out which spoke was loose on a customer's wheel because the tension meter kept giving weird readings. Turned out the rim was slightly bent, not the spoke at all. Has anyone else chased a false problem like that and wasted way more time than the actual fix?

Heard this from a buddy who works on bikes. He spent an hour chasing a creak. Turned out it was just a loose valve stem rattling. The actual fix took him like 10 seconds.
