Just changed my mind about watching shows with my phone out

For years, I'd watch a new series while also scrolling on my phone, thinking I could follow along. Last week, I tried 'Shogun' and got totally lost in the first episode. My friend in Austin said to put my phone in another room and just try it for one hour. I did, and I caught so many small details in the costumes and the dialogue that I had been missing. Has anyone else tried a no-phone watch and found a show got way better?

Honestly, putting your phone in another room sounds like overkill. I can follow "Shogun" just fine with my phone on the couch. A lot of shows have slow parts where checking a text or scrolling for a minute doesn't make you miss anything important.

My buddy swore he could watch "The Wire" with his phone out. He asked me who Stringer Bell was in season three because he missed the entire power shift. That show doesn't have filler, just like "Shogun." You blink, you're lost.

Yeah but @thomas_butler, that's how it starts. You tell yourself you'll just check a text, then you fall into a scroll hole during a quiet scene. Next thing you know, you've missed the whole whispered plot point about the conspiracies in Osaka. I tried your way and had to rewind three times in one episode because I looked up and had no idea why a character was suddenly in a boat. The show's all about subtle looks and quiet threats. Put the thing in the kitchen.
