My partner and I tried to watch two different 'slow burn' shows last month
I picked 'The Terror' and she picked 'The Leftovers'. We gave each one three full episodes to hook us. 'The Terror' had me from the first scene with the frozen ship, but 'The Leftovers' just felt like a confusing slog (sorry fans). The big difference was that one gave you a clear, scary problem right away, and the other kept everything too vague. What's a show that hooked you immediately versus one you had to drop?

Your experiment shows a real split in how stories grab people. It reminds me of cooking, actually. Some dishes need a long simmer to develop flavor, but you still need a good smell from the kitchen to keep you waiting. A show can be slow, but if it doesn't give you one solid thing to hold onto, it's easy to walk away. That need for an early hook, even a small one, shows up everywhere from work meetings to first dates.

Totally agree, @morgan.jason! I stuck with "The Wire" because the characters felt real from the first scene, even though it builds slowly.

That cooking point from @morgan.jason is dead on. "Dark" grabbed me instantly with its first mystery, but I dropped "Mad Men" after two episodes because nobody gave me a reason to care. You need that early hook, even if it's small, or people just check out.
