My sister swore I'd love The Bear, my buddy swore I'd love Dark, and I only had one free weekend
So I had a Friday night with nothing going on and two shows sitting in my watchlist for about 4 months. My sister kept telling me The Bear was the best show she'd seen in a decade, and my buddy from work would not shut up about Dark being this mind bending puzzle you have to pay full attention to. I picked The Bear because it was shorter episodes and I was tired that week. Big mistake for a different reason than you'd guess. I watched all 8 episodes in one sitting and barely slept, then spent the next 3 days walking around my kitchen stressed out about a fictional sandwich shop in Chicago. The pacing is relentless and the family dinner episode genuinely raised my heart rate. My buddy is still mad I skipped Dark, and now I owe him a weekend where I actually give it my full attention instead of half watching it while scrolling. Has anyone else started one show and felt like they picked the wrong vibe for the mood they were in? Because I think I ruined The Bear for myself by binging it tired.
Did you ever start a book at the wrong time and then blame the book for weeks? I did that with a long fantasy series my cousin pushed on me for a year. I finally cracked it open on a red eye flight after no sleep, read like 200 pages in a fog, and told everyone it was boring. Picked it up again six months later on a lazy Sunday and could not put it down. It was never the book. It was me being a zombie. So yeah, mood matters way more than people admit. The Bear is one of those shows that grabs you by the chest and shakes, and doing that on zero sleep sounds rough. My advice is wait a while, then rewatch it slow, one episode a night like it was meant to be. The dinner episode hits hard either way but at least you will remember it.
