Update: Subtitles totally fixed my audio issue with shows

I kept missing important dialogue in series because the sound was often unclear. Turning on subtitles let me follow everything easily, but friends debate if it breaks the flow or helps focus. Do you prefer subtitles on or off when binging, and why?

This subtitle shift totally mirrors how we all use captions on social media clips now, because the audio is often useless. It's like we've accepted that reading along is just part of watching anything, not a special need. Bad sound mixing in shows makes it a must, so you catch every mumbled word without straining. Your brain adapts pretty quickly, blending the reading and listening without breaking focus at all. That adaptation feels like a quiet, everyday skill we've all picked up to handle imperfect media. Choosing to watch without them now just feels like willingly missing out on chunks of the story.

When you said "bad sound mixing" I actually gasped. It's not just mumbling, it's like a character's whispering into a jet engine and then a plate drops. I have to keep my thumb on the volume button the whole time, which is its own sad technical skill. @laura667 is right that turning subtitles off now feels like choosing to miss things, but for me it's less about adapting and more about giving up on the mix being fixed. The fact we all just accept this as normal is the wildest part.

Honestly I leave them on for everything now, no question. The sound mixing on so many shows is just terrible, with loud music drowning out quiet talking. I used to miss key plot points all the time. Having the subtitles on means I never have to rewind, so for me it actually keeps the flow way better. Anyone who says it breaks the flow probably hasn't tried it for a full season. Once you get used to it, you just read without even thinking and catch every single word.
