Why does nobody warn you that subtitles can spoil a whole season

I was three episodes into Dark on Netflix last week, laying in bed with my phone face up on the nightstand, when my roommate walked in and asked if I had gotten to the part where a certain character's older self shows up. I hadn't. But the episode I was watching literally had a subtitle line that gave away a death two seasons early, and once I saw it I couldn't unsee it. I switched to the German audio with English subs after that and it fixed the problem, mostly. Has anyone else run into a show where the subs spoil stuff the dub doesn't?
