Spent 45 minutes fixing a glitch that was just a loose monitor cable
I was editing a video for a client and the timeline kept jumping around randomly. I thought it was a software bug so I reinstalled the whole program, which took like an hour. Then I checked all my settings, updated drivers, the whole nine yards. Finally I bumped my desk and the screen flickered, and I realized the display cable was barely hanging on. Has anyone else gone down a rabbit hole only to find the fix was something that simple?

Is it really fair to call that a rabbit hole though? You skipped the most basic step of checking physical connections, which is literally troubleshooting 101. I've seen people spend hours on software when the real issue is a cable or a loose component. Maybe the problem is we reach for the complicated fix first because it feels more satisfying than admitting we overlooked something obvious. A little patience and a systematic approach could save most people from these kinds of "rabbit holes" entirely.

Right, but is it really that deep though? @colescott's post wasn't about a systematic approach to anything, it was a funny story about a common mistake we all make. Sometimes a cable is loose and you feel dumb, that's just life. Not everything has to be a whole lecture on troubleshooting theory.

Ngl, my troubleshooting process is basically me confidently reseating cables after two hours of driver updates and hoping nobody saw it happen. Classic case of wanting to feel like a hardware ninja when I'm really just the guy who forgot to plug it in.
