A guy at my Tuesday game night told me I was playing Settlers wrong and I've been thinking about it for 6 days
So last Tuesday at our game night in the back room of the pizza place on Grand Ave, this dude Dave who I've played with maybe 4 times watched me set up my first two settlements and just said, flat out, "you keep building toward the ports and it's why you always stall out at 8 points." I wanted to argue but then I looked at my last 5 games in the app and he was right, I had lost all 5 and never cracked 8 points in any of them. I always go for the 3 to 1 port because it feels safe and flexible, but he pointed out that I burn two early turns on roads to reach it and then I'm behind on ore the entire game. I tried it his way on Saturday, skipped the port entirely, parked on a 6 ore and a 5 wheat, and won with 10 points before anyone else hit 7. It felt weird the whole time, like I was leaving money on the table, but the numbers don't lie. Now I'm second guessing every opening placement I make and it's kind of ruining the fun a little. Does anyone else have a habit they didn't know was a habit until someone called it out mid game?
