Hot take: I skipped the insert in Wingspan and the game got better
Played 12 games with my group at the kitchen table in Reno and we ditched the insert after game 3 because setup was eating 15 minutes of our 90 minute game night, and now I want to know if anyone else just tosses the plastic tray and bags everything by player color.

Tossing the insert is a mistake for most groups and I will die on this hill. The tray is not just storage, it is a sorting system that tells you exactly where every egg, food token, and card goes the second you open the box, and once you bag by player color you are digging through eight little baggies hunting for one bonus card while the turn timer runs. My group tried the bag route for a month and setup actually went up, not down, because nobody could find the round end goals without dumping everything on the table. Keep the tray, just pre-sort the decks before game night and your setup drops to five minutes flat.
