I think board game meetups got way more efficient around 2019

Back in 2015 I used to go to a weekly meetup at a game store in Denver and we'd spend the first 45 minutes just deciding what to play. Then around 2019 a new organizer took over and started pre-assigning games based on player count and signups. Now most of these groups have digital signup sheets where you pick a game before you even show up. Has anyone else seen this shift or is it just the groups I've been going to?

Honestly, that shift to pre-assigning games really did make things faster. It cut down on that awkward 45-minute negotiation phase where everyone just circles the same five games. Ngl, it's way better for actually getting to play instead of just talking about what to play.

Right? @adam_baker that one guy always picking Mario Kart is a real mood killer. Pre-assigning at least keeps his Kart obsession to one round instead of six.

Right? @hannah_wells nailed it. That "awkward 45-minute negotiation phase" was the absolute worst part of game night for our group. We'd have three people who wanted to play something complex, two who wanted a quick party game, and one guy who just wanted to keep playing the same Mario Kart he always picks. Now we just flip a coin and go, way less wasted time.
