I used to think heavier board games were always better until a buddy talked me down

I had this conversation with my friend Dave at our weekly game night last Saturday. He brought out this lighter game called Cascadia and I rolled my eyes a bit, thinking it was too simple. I told him I prefer games with 50 page rulebooks and heavy euros. But he just said 'man, not every game needs to feel like work, sometimes you just want to make some nice patterns and chill.' And it hit me different because I realized most of my favorite nights were the ones where we laughed more than we stared at the board. I've been skipping lighter games for like 3 years now and I think I missed the point. Has anyone else had a moment where they realized they were snobby about game weight?

Oh man, I gotta disagree a bit. Heavy games have that crunchy satisfaction where every choice really matters, and that feeling is hard to beat for me. Don't you ever miss that intense focus?

Finding a middle ground worked out pretty well for me. My group does one heavy game and then closes the night with something lighter like Azul or Splendor. That way everyone gets what they want and we don't burn out on either side.

6 out of 10 times the lighter game at the end just falls flat for me. Splendor is fine, but after something heavy it feels like we're winding down instead of playing a real game. I'd rather just go all in on the heavy stuff and let that be the whole night.
