My Catan game nearly ended a friendship last Friday night
I was hosting a game night at my place in Austin with 4 friends, and we were about 2 hours into a heated Catan game. I tried to trade with Sarah for some ore, but she got annoyed and accused me of always trying to win at her expense. Things got tense quick, and she actually stood up and said 'I'm not playing this if you're gonna be a jerk about it.' I had to pause the game, apologize for being too competitive, and we took a 15 minute break to grab drinks and cool off. After that, we agreed to keep the trades casual and focus on having fun instead of winning. Has anyone else had a game night go sideways like that and had to fix the vibe?

Ask if it's really that deep tbh. I've seen Catan arguments before but usually people are just playing up the drama for laughs, not actually mad. If you guys are actually getting to the point where someone's storming off, maybe the issue isn't the game itself but something else going on between you. My group just trash talks each other and moves on, we never have to pause for "cool off breaks.

My buddy told me his group had a full blown Catan meltdown where someone flipped the board and wouldn't talk to anyone for a week... turned out the guy was just going through a nasty breakup and couldn't handle losing at anything.
