Realized I was hoarding board games instead of playing them after counting my shelves last month

I always thought I was a hardcore gamer because I owned 47 games, but then I sat down and counted how many I actually played in the last year - it was 6. My friends at the local shop in Denver kept asking if I wanted to trade, and that hit me that I was just collecting plastic and cardboard. Has anyone else here snapped out of a buying habit and actually started playing more?

Started boxing up all my unplayed games after I saw a post like this and found a copy of Troyes I bought in 2013 still in the shrink wrap. That game was supposed to be my gateway into euro games but I got distracted by a Kickstarter for some miniatures game that took two years to arrive and by then I had already bought five more boxes. Now I keep a "play pile" on my coffee table and force myself to try one game a week, even if it's just solo mode. Last weekend I finally cracked open a copy of The Gallerist that was gathering dust and it was actually way better than I expected, like why did I wait three years to punch these cardboard coins.

I used to think the whole "play what you own" thing was just guilt tripping, but @holly709 you made me dig through my shelf and I found a sealed copy of something I forgot I even bought. Now I'm actually curious about what else I've been sitting on.

Disagree hard with this take. Buying games and collecting them is a separate hobby from playing them, and pretending otherwise just makes you feel bad for no reason. @stellat46 I get that the "play pile" thing feels productive but you're basically turning your hobby into homework. I've got boxes still in shrink from 2015 and they're like little time capsules waiting for the right mood. Cracked open a sealed copy of Food Chain Magnate last month and it was great because I finally wanted to play it, not because I forced myself to meet some weekly quota. The Gallerist will still be there next year.
