TIL an old game store rule changed how I run my weekly board game night

I was at a local game store in Portland last month called Dice & Drinks. The owner told me he doesn't let anyone play a game until they explain the rules in their own words. At first I thought it was harsh, but then I saw how much smoother the games went. Now I do the same thing at my weekly board game night at my place. One side says it slows things down and feels like school. The other side says it saves time because nobody asks questions halfway through. I've tried it both ways and the explain-first method definitely cuts down on rule arguments. Has anyone else tried something like this at their game group and seen a difference?

My buddy Dave tried this at his game night and one guy literally packed up his bag and left mid-explanation, said it felt like a job interview.

Wait, so the owner actually makes people explain the rules before they even sit down to play? That's wild, I can't imagine trying that with my group without someone walking out.
