Vent: my brother in law called my 45 minute Twilight Imperium teach a waste of a night
He said nobody wants to sit through rules when they could just learn as they play, and honestly it stung because I rehearsed that teach for two days. Two players at my table in Sacramento quit halfway through round three and I still don't know if it was me or the game. How long do you all spend teaching a heavy game before you just throw people in?
Man, I once spent an hour prepping a teach for Food Chain Magnate and my buddy fell asleep on my couch while I was still on the setup rules. That said, 45 minutes for TI is actually kind of impressive, that game is a beast and there is no clean way to just learn as you play when there are like six phases per round and everyone has different faction powers. The "learn as you go" crowd always says that until they hit turn two and realize they built their whole opening wrong because nobody told them about command counters. Two players bailing in round three probably wasn't you, because TI is a four hour minimum commitment and some people just can't hang once the board gets messy. I usually do a 15 minute overview of the main loop and scoring, then teach the rest as it comes up, but that only works with people who actually read the player aids. Your brother in law sounds like the type who would call any game longer than Monopoly a waste of a night, so I wouldn't take that one too hard.
