Every new welder gets this wrong about bevel angles

I've been in the trade 25 years, and the last 5 apprentices I've worked with all cut their bevels at 45 degrees thinking it's the only way. For anything over 1 inch thick on a pressure vessel, you're wasting time and filler - 37.5 degrees gives you way better penetration and less chance of slag inclusion. Anyone else see this on the job?

Hold on, wait a minute. You're telling me a full 45 degree bevel is actually hurting things on the thick stuff? That's wild because I remember my old timer boss used to swear it was the only way to get a solid root pass on a pressure vessel. I've been doing 45 degrees for years on anything over 3/4 inch, but now you're saying a five degree difference is that big of a deal for slag? I gotta try 37.5 on my next big tank repair, because I've definitely fought with slag inclusion on some of those thick joints before.
