Journeyman told me to stop marking my fittings, said it's a crutch. I think he's wrong.
I was tacking up a 36 inch header last week and the old hand on my crew said marking your cuts is for apprentices who can't eyeball it. Told him I've seen too many 1/16 gaps open up on a hot pass to trust my eyes over a soapstone line. Where do you all land on this, mark it or trust the fit up by feel?
Man, I feel you on this one. That journeyman sounds like he's just repeating something he heard once and never thought about it. Marking your cuts is not a crutch, it's called being smart about your work. I've seen guys who swear they can eyeball it and then spend twice as long grinding and re-fitting when the gap is off. A soapstone line costs you two seconds and saves you ten minutes of fixing a bad fit. Do what works for you and let the old hand run his mouth.
