Just read that the first steam boiler patent in the US was granted in 1791, which is way older than I thought.

Found it in this old trade magazine at the dentist's office. I always figured it was more of an industrial revolution thing, like mid-1800s. Makes you think about the guys banging those first rivets together. Anyone know what that first patented design was even for?

Read somewhere they had to test the early parachutes themselves.

Used to think those early testers were just crazy. @emma455, reading about how they had no real choice but to jump changed my mind. It wasn't about being brave, it was about having a job that said you had to try it. They probably figured someone had to do it, might as well be them. That kind of quiet need to get the work done hits different than just being a daredevil.
