Old timer at the shop made me rethink my whole welding setup

I was grinding down a bad fillet weld on a tank head in the yard last Wednesday, and this retired boilermaker who hangs around the fab shop started watching me. He said, 'you're fighting that stinger like it owes you money, you ever try draping the lead over your shoulder instead of letting it drag?' I laughed it off at first, but then I tried it on the next pass and my arc control felt way smoother, almost like the cable weight was pulling my hand steady. It got me thinking about all the little habits I picked up from YouTube instead of actual old hands, and now I'm second guessing my electrode angle too. Anyone else had some random retiree drop a tip that flipped your whole routine?
