Tack weld let go 40 feet up, my calls saved the crew or caused the chaos?
Working a repair on a hopper in Tacoma last month, a tack snapped mid-fit and I yelled to drop the chain. The foreman figured I overreacted and wanted to keep going, but that joint shifted a good 2 inches. Did I make the right call to stop the lift, or do you guys ride out the adjustment when the steel settles?
How much did that joint end up moving after you dropped the chain, because 2 inches at 40 feet is a lot of stored energy waiting to let go? A tack that pops under load is telling you the fit was fighting itself, and forcing it usually just means the next snap happens when somebody's hands are in the pinch point. Curious what the foreman said once he actually saw the gap.
