That $28 chalk line reel that snapped on a tight seam
Bought a cheap chalk line last month for a 60 foot header layout. Snapped it on the second pull, chalk went everywhere and the line tangled into a knot. Picked up a decent one for $45 at the supply house and it's held up on three jobs since. Anyone else stopped buying the bargain bin measuring gear after getting burned once? I'm curious if the mid range stuff is worth it or if I should just go full price next time.

Did the chalk line snap or did your patience snap first? Because I've been there, buddy. The bargain bin stuff is designed to break exactly when you're on the last measurement of the day, it's like they know. I learned my lesson with a tape measure that folded in half mid-pull, so now I treat cheap measuring tools like a warning label. Mid range is where it's at, full price is just paying for a brand name that'll get scuffed anyway. Honestly, if it survives three jobs, it's earned its keep.
