That time a 2 inch test plate made me rethink my whole fit-up process
Used to just tack everything up based on the tape measure and eyeballing it, but last month at the shop in Gary we had a job reject 3 welds because the root gap closed up after tacking. Started doing a quick dry fit with the actual backing bar and checking the gap with a feeler gauge before every pass. It added maybe 10 minutes per joint but saved us from redoing a whole 40 foot seam. Anyone else had a simple prep step that cut their rework way down?
