Why does everyone insist on grinding out old rivets when drilling works fine?
I've watched three crews in the Tacoma yard spend an hour with a torch on rivets that a sharp cobalt bit knocked out in 15 minutes, and nobody ever questions the tradition. Maybe it's about the look or the feel of the flame, but I've been drilling ship hulls for 8 years and my joints stay cleaner too. Is there some code or safety rule I'm missing that makes grinding the only real option on heavy plate?
