Hot take: my 11-year-old nephew ruined our book club pick by asking one question at dinner
Last Tuesday at my sister's house in Akron, my nephew looked up from his mac and cheese and asked why the mean dad in our book club pick gets a happy ending while the mom just disappears. Our whole group spent 40 minutes arguing about the ending at the next meeting, which is longer than we spent on the actual book. Does your club ever get derailed by an outside take like that?
Man, we had almost the exact same thing happen with my cousin's kid. He asked why the mom in our pick never got a chapter of her own and we spent the whole next meeting on that instead of the book. What finally worked for us was making it the last ten minutes only. We let the kid fire off his take first, then tied it back to one scene in the book so it felt like part of the talk and not a whole new topic. That way nobody feels shut down and we still get through the actual chapters.
