Hot take: People keep saying 'The Great Gatsby' is a love story...
I've heard this in three different clubs now, but the book is clearly about class and the failure of the American Dream. Has anyone else had to argue this point?

Honestly, what gets me is how people miss that Daisy was never going to leave her world for him. Tbh, do they think a love story ends with the guy dead and alone in a pool while she's already moved on?

Yeah, I once tried to explain the whole class thing to my cousin and accidentally called Daisy a trophy wife. The look on her face was priceless, I basically talked myself into a corner for an hour.

My buddy got into a full on yelling match about this at a party last week. He was trying to explain the whole class thing and this girl just kept saying "but he loved her." It was wild lol.

Honestly, I once tried to explain the class stuff to my date and ended up comparing Gatsby's mansion to a really sad McMansion. Ngl, it did not go well. I feel for your buddy derekhunt, that argument sounds painfully familiar.
