Debates just ruin the magic of a good ending for me.

Six debates about The Giver's ending, and you think that ruins the magic? That blows my mind. For me, talking about why an ending works makes it even better. It's like learning how a magic trick is done but still enjoying the show. The feeling doesn't fade, it just turns into something you can talk about with others. Debates help you spot all the little details you might have missed on your own.

Our sixth debate was on that weird last chapter in The Giver, and I walked in totally sure it ruined the book. Hearing other takes didn't kill the magic for me, it just moved it. The magic went from just feeling the ending to understanding why it made me feel that way. It's a different kind of appreciation.

Totally get what you mean about the magic moving. Had the same thing happen with our talk on Of Mice and Men. I was just sad about the ending, full stop. But hearing how everyone else saw it, like the mercy in it or the broken promise, it added layers. It didn't take away my first feeling, it just built a whole new thing on top of it. Now when I think about that book I have all these other ideas connected to my own.
