I picked a book I hated for my club and it actually worked out
My turn to pick for our club came up last month, and I grabbed this super dense historical fiction novel from the library sale for like $2. I thought it looked boring, but I figured we'd at least have something to complain about. We met up on Tuesday, and for the first 20 minutes everyone just ripped into it, which was expected. But then my friend Jenna said she actually liked how the author wrote the boring parts on purpose to show the main character's dull life, and that sparked a huge debate. We ended up arguing for an hour about whether a book needs to be enjoyable to be good, which we never do. I learned that picking a book you think is bad can make for a way better discussion than picking a safe one everyone will mildly like. Has your club ever had a better fight over a book you all disliked?

That "boring on purpose" take would start a fight in any book club. We once spent a whole meeting yelling about a terrible ending.

Yelling about a book" just seems like a weird way to spend your free time. It's not that deep.

That "boring on purpose" idea is a real stretch, and I'm with @wilson.olivia on yelling about bad endings being more fun. Arguing about a book's quality for an hour seems like a lot of energy for something you all basically hated.
