My book club told me I summarize too much instead of discussing

They said I kept giving plot recap instead of talking about themes or character flaws. Now I force myself to pick one specific detail or quote from the chapter before I speak. Has anyone else had to retrain how they talk in a group just to fit in?

Five different book clubs over ten years and honestly the ones that got hung up on "correct" discussion format were always the most boring. Maybe they just want you to hate the book less so they can all agree it was perfect.

Made my husband read the whole chapter out loud one time before book club so I couldn't recap.
