Our book club read a thriller and the debate got brutal
Last month my group picked a popular thriller and half the members hated the ending. One guy straight up said the twist only worked if you ignored all the clues from chapter 3. I used to just go with the flow on book picks, but that criticism made me look back at the whole story. Now I ask each member to write down one thing that bugged them before we start the discussion. It keeps the debate focused and stops it from becoming a vent session. Has anyone else tried pre-discussion notes to avoid messy arguments?

Hold up, I'm gonna push back hard on this one. Pre-discussion notes sound like homework, not a book club. The whole point of getting together is to have a messy, real-time debate where people get fired up and change their minds. Writing down complaints beforehand just turns it into a laundry list of gripes with no room for someone to say "wait, actually that clue made sense if you read it this way." I've seen groups where people come ready with written takes and it kills the whole energy. The best discussions I've had were when someone said something wild and someone else went "no way, here's why you're wrong" and we sorted it out on the spot. Let the chaos happen, that's where the fun is.

Feels like everyone pre-writes their hot takes now instead of actually listening. lol
