Rant: My book club almost fell apart over a single line in 'Klara and the Sun'
We were talking about the ending for 20 minutes, everyone getting mad. I kept pushing my view, saying the AI definitely understood love. Then my friend Sarah said, 'You're not listening, you're just waiting to talk.' That hit me. I replayed the chat in my head and she was right. I missed three good points because I was planning my next argument. Now I actually pause after someone speaks. Anyone else get called out on their debate style?

Sarah's line about waiting to talk is a gut punch because it's so common. I see it all the time at my kid's soccer games where parents just rehearse their next complaint instead of hearing the coach. We get so stuck on winning the point that we forget the talk itself is the point. It turns a book club or any chat into a weird competition nobody signed up for. How do you even start to break that habit for good?

That podcast "Ten Percent Happier" had a whole episode on listening without planning your reply.

Ugh, that soccer game example is perfect. It's like we're all just loading our next verbal bullet instead of actually being in the room with people.
