Warning: dropped $60 on a "book club kit" that was just a tote bag and 10 printed questions
Our club meets every other Thursday at a diner in Akron and we take turns hosting the pick. Back in March I got lazy and bought one of those prepackaged book club kits online for $60 because it promised discussion cards, a reading guide, and a themed gift. What showed up was a canvas tote with the book's title printed crooked, a stack of index cards with stuff like "how did the ending make you feel," and a candle that smelled like a craft store clearance bin. Our group of 8 tore through the cards in about 15 minutes, and two people asked if I had actually read the book or just bought the box. The worst part is the same questions are free on the publisher's site, I checked after the fact. So now I am the cautionary tale of the group and we have a rule that hosts have to write their own questions. Has anyone found a kit that was actually worth it, or is doing it yourself the only way?
