Does glue type really matter for small repair jobs? Argued with a conservator about it
Last month I fixed a 1920s poetry book with plain PVA glue, and it turned out great. But a conservator from a Toronto shop told me I should've used a reversible hide glue, saying PVA can damage the spine over time. I mean, for a book that was already falling apart, is reversibility that important? Maybe it's just me, but I feel like a solid fix that holds beats a fancy glue that might fail in 20 years. Has anyone else had a repair hold up fine with basic PVA, or am I missing something about the archival side of the debate?
