Old timer at the bindery told me to stop using wheat paste for everything
Guy named Frank who'd been doing rebinds since the 70s said wheat paste would eventually attract silverfish no matter how careful I was. After my third book got little holes in the hinges I finally switched to methyl cellulose, and he was right about that.

My buddy Steve lost three leather bindings to silverfish before he finally ditched wheat paste.

Wait, did Steve ever figure out what was actually eating them? My friend Dave had the same problem with his old comic collection, turned out it was those little bugs living in the cardboard boxes he stored them in. He switched to plastic bins and never saw another silverfish again, total game changer.

Three bindings? That's rough. I lost a whole journal once to a leaky pipe.
