Saw something interesting at the library in Springfield
I was at the main library in Springfield last week and noticed they have a whole section of new books bound in cloth with bright patterns. The librarian told me they're working with a local binder to make them more durable for kids. It's a cool way to keep older books in use longer. Has anyone else seen libraries doing this kind of repair work?

Yeah, it's part of that whole fix-it trend. People are finally getting tired of throwing everything away.

Getting tired of throwing everything away" is a nice thought, charles720, but that's not the real driver for most people. The fix-it trend is mostly about cost. When new stuff is too expensive, fixing the old thing becomes the only option. It's less about being tired of waste and more about being tired of high prices. Calling it a trend makes it sound like a choice, but for a lot of folks it's just necessity.

I saw a report last year that said over 60% of people who repair items do it mainly to save money. @kai_burns73 is right that calling it a trend hides how hard it is for a lot of people. My neighbor fixes his own washing machine because a new one would be half his rent. It feels good to not waste stuff, but the big reason is always the wallet. For a lot of us, it's not a cool hobby, it's just what you have to do to get by.
