Thought coptic stitch was overrated until I saw a 400 year old ledger at the Boston Athenaeum still holding together
The chain links had flexed with the parchment for centuries instead of fighting it, which is the opposite of what my glued spines do after 20 years. Anyone else switch their whole approach after handling one old book up close?
Doubt one old book should make you scrap your whole method. A 400 year old ledger survived because it sat in a library and nobody opened it much, not because coptic stitch is magic. Plenty of glued books from that era fell apart too, so the takeaway is more "old stuff lasts when it's pampered" than "coptic wins.
