Tried laminating endpapers with wallpaper paste instead of wheat starch and it actually held
Had a rush rebind last month on a 1920s ledger and was out of wheat starch paste, so I mixed up some wallpaper paste from the hardware store in town. It's been 6 weeks and the endpapers haven't lifted or cockled at all. Has anyone else gone this route, or am I setting myself up for a mess down the road?
What brand of wallpaper paste did you use, and was it the kind with fungicide already mixed in? That matters a lot because the fungicide can off-gas and stain paper over time, especially on older stock like a 1920s ledger. Also, what did you use to thin it, plain water or something else? The real test is going to be humidity swings, so if you're in a dry spell right now you might not see the trouble until summer. Keep us posted at the 6 month mark, I'm curious if the bond holds once the weather changes.
