Warning: I thought the old guy at the flea market selling a 1930s sewing awl was pulling my leg
Stopped at the flea market over in Elkhart two Saturdays back and this old fella had a rusty awl sitting on a folding table for $8, swore up and down it would outlast any of the new ones I'd been buying online. I laughed it off, but he showed me how the haft was peened and the handle had a leather washer that had hardened like a rock, and he said "son, that's why it still turns." Brought it home, gave it a good cleaning, and it punched through a 90 lb text block cleaner than the $35 one I got last month, which I had already snapped the tip off of. Now I'm second guessing every cheap tool I've ordered and wondering if I should be combing estate sales instead. Has anyone else found a real gem at a flea market, or did I just get lucky?
