Was dead set against those bookbinding cradles until I tried one

I always thought those foam cradles were just a gimmick to overcomplicate things. Been binding for like 8 years just using my hands and a wedge. But a guy at the Philly Book Arts meetup last month let me borrow his for a 1700s textblock that was super fragile and crumbly. Honestly it made a huge difference not stressing about the spine cracking while I worked. Anyone else have a tool they wrote off and then changed their mind on?
