Went to a library book sale in Portland, the repair jobs made me wince

I hit up the Multnomah County library sale last weekend and grabbed a stack of old hardcovers. At least a third of them had been 'fixed' with packing tape over the spines and hinges, which is just a mess to peel off. Do any of you have a go-to way to get that sticky residue off without wrecking the cloth covers?

Peeling off packing tape from a book is the worst torture. I swear, whoever did that must've been in a hurry to close up shop for the day. Try a little bit of Goo Gone on a cotton swab, but test it on a corner first because that stuff can stain cloth covers fast.
