Why I gave up on PVA for bookcloth, went back to wheat paste
Spent a solid year using PVA on every bookcloth spine because everyone online swore by it. Last month I did a rebind of a 1940s novel and the cloth just peeled right off the boards after drying, no heat or humidity involved. Switched to wheat paste for the same job and it held like concrete, even let me reposition the cloth without tearing the paper. Paste takes longer to set but I'll take an extra hour over a failed joint any day. Has anybody else seen PVA fail on coated bookcloth at home, or was I just using a bad batch?
